Sovereign Youth & Community Centre Reigate
The newest addition to the Reigate and Redhill YMCA’s portfolio is the new YMCA Sovereign Centre in Woodhatch near Reigate in Surrey. Following two years of planning and a further year of major refurbishments, paid for by a £1.2 million capital fundraising appeal by Reigate and Redhill YMCA, the centre is now a bright, modern and fully equipped community centre for all local children and young people to enjoy.
During the refurbishment, MSL were contracted to design and install a wide range of audio lighting and video systems throughout the site.
Special Projects Manager Darrel Olivier was given the task of putting together a variety of audio and video solutions that would enhance the excellent facilities and create a state of the art venue that could be used by local children, young people, adults and other visiting professionals.
The Centre boasts a number of fully accessible areas including a large sports hall which houses two giant inflatable’s and two full size trampolines, a Martial arts Dojo, a Drop in centre, an activity room along with a purpose built Hub which houses a sensory room, soft play room, art room, toilet and wash facilities and has a sophisticated hoist system all of which have been created specifically for children and young people with disabilities in mind.
The Sensory Room benefits from a Hitachi ultra short throw high brightness projector, allowing them to project directly on to the wall surfaces, creating a 100” diagonal image, combined with a High resolution colour camera, Panasonic DVD player and full Kramer Electronics connectivity, the completed solution offers a superb learning tool. Audio was delivered using 4 ultra compact JBL Control 52 satellite speakers and a single JBL Control 52 sub bass enclosure.
A Pulsar LED wall colour wash system, with Chromaline LED strips and a simple to use Pulsar Outstation were installed to allow the staff to change the colour and look of the room at the touch of a button.
The Michael Palmer Room, named after one of the Reigate and Redhill YMCA board members, boats a similar specification to the Sensory Room, with a Hitachi ultra short throw high brightness projector, associated Kramer Electronics connectivity and a Panasonic DVD player. Delivering the audio system are 4 QSC AD-S82H speakers, a Crown XLS amplifier and dedicated Numark CD Mixer console and iPod dock unit. The audio equipment was all located in a transportable equipment rack, enabling the equipment to be stored easily.
The audio system in the new Dojo space was supplied using 4 compact QSC surface mounted speakers, a Toa 100V line amplifier and a wall mounted equipment rack to accommodate the Numark CD/MP3 and iPod device equipment.
The Drop in centre utilises a fully interactive short throw Hitachi projector, with software to enable the staff to create interactive presentation in house again a full Kramer Electronics connectivity was used , a fixed frame 4:3 projector screen flush mounted into the wall and discreet wall mounted speakers completed the installation.
The Hub, now boasts a Mitsubshi ultra bright WXGA projector and a motorised 200cm 16:9 format projection screen. Kramer Electronics again supplied all of the connectivity with a Panasonic DVD player providing source media. We also designed and installed a custom automated Draper Micro projector lift, enabling the projector to retract into the ceiling void when not in use. Audio-wise, again 4 QSC AD-S82 surface mount speakers combined Cloud MPA240 multi input amplifier.
The YMCA Sovereign Centre officially opened in September 2011 and is now a hive of activity hosting a huge variety of different services for local families, such as gymnastics, martial arts, dance, under 5 activities and youth services as well as schemes for children and young people with disabilities.
They are not finished yet however, and are still fundraising to enable the development of an accessible outside play area, all donations are gratefully received.
